Is Working From Home Overrated?

Image courtesy of photostock / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

While there are those who would refuse to consider working from home or working at home a ‘legit’ job, there are also those who think of it like it’s the coolest thing on earth!  And why not, you get to work even if you don’t go to work, errr that is because you technically work from home. Nonetheless, it does seem like it’s a cool thing, right?

Working from home can really be that cool and obviously it does have its perks, but don’t get carried away just yet.  The very idea of working from home may give some people the notion of having the ‘luxury’ of free time.  Like you can work only when or sometimes even where you want to – say start the work on Tuesdays instead of the dreaded Mondays, or work while enjoying the beach or hanging out at Starbucks for instance.  Or work only if you feel like it. Well, not quite the case.

I’m sorry to burst your bubble but if you’re serious about working from home, you will have to look at it as what it’s supposed to be – work.  It’s still work, you only get to do it at home or somewhere else instead of the office and it just so happens that you don’t have a boss breathing down your neck but then again, it’s still work.

Working from home, whether you have your own home business or online business, or  you’re still working for a company and only given the option to work from home, does not necessarily mean that you can work only when you want to.

If you’re working for a company – you still need to answer to someone, probably, a higher authority that you need to report to.  So frankly, you can’t just say I don’t have it yet cause I don’t feel like working yet.  I don’t think that will fly well to anyone who’s counting on you about something.

If you have your own home business – you are responsible for the success of such and your work attitude will readily reflect on your business’ standing.  Not to mention that you’ll have to deal with other people as well in the course of your business and such will require commitment as well.

Image courtesy of digitalart / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Sure, you can work only when you want to.

As long as you’re meeting deadlines or delivering results then you can very well work only when you want to.  But the reality is that you’re going to need a strong sense of dedication if you really want to succeed at working from home.  Of course that is if you’re planning to really choose it over your ‘regular work’ and that you intend to make a living out of it.

The truth is that there will be days that even if you don’t feel like working, you simply have to, because the bottom line is that you have to be responsible –yes, even when working at home.

Sure you can reschedule the things that needed to be done, push some of it so you could have your free time to relax, go out or simply to give in to your ‘not-up-for-it’ mood.  But caution should be taken, because giving in to this habit of pushing things off may result to an overwhelming work load and cramming in the end that could very well contribute to stress.

Work while lounging at the beach.

Sounds pretty cool, huh!  Well, it’ll be a stretch to do this.  Sure you can check your email and stuff while you’re on vacation (the wonders of internet and gadgets, I know!), but seriously, work while on the beach?  Isn’t the whole purpose of being on the beach is to relax?  So why would you want to work?  I doubt if your brain will even cooperate with the idea of ‘working’ when it’s obviously on vacation mode – given the feel of sand under your feet, the sun on your face, the smell of the ocean…you know the works.

Working from home does give you the flexibility to work outside of the office, given of course that you have your laptop and all.  As the name implies, work at home, basically, you’re creating an office right at your home.  So the idea of working while on the beach or while hanging out at Starbucks sounds a little impractical.

When you’re out and about, of course there will be distractions, there will be certain limitations (your laptop may not have all the files you need because it’s on your desktop at home), not to mention that the whole idea of going out or vacationing is to relax if not to socialize!

Sure, you can check, keep up with the on goings and attend to urgent cases – while on the beach or wherever.  But work like seriously work?  Hmmm, haven’t you had enough working to do at home since you’re working from home?

What’s Up With Working Online?

It’s not surprising now a days to find stay at home moms that are choosing to work as well, hence, work at home moms.  Whether it’s to augment the family’s income or to boost confidence and personal development, I personally think it’s a great way to make motherhood even more interesting.

Putting the welfare of the children and of the family is of course always the priority.  But it doesn’t mean that we should let the opportunity to grow pass us by because we’re so focused at being a mom and a wife.

It does help tremendously to accomplish something – help with the family’s finances or affect changes to other people’s lives or even professional growth – to feel validation that you can be more than what you’ve previously thought you can be.

Why more and more WAHM are online?

Why, basically because technology is becoming more and more accessible and the internet world, undeniably, is here to stay.  Opportunities are being presented in a way that makes online job and or online business a possibility and a doable venture that even stay at home moms can invest into.

Contrary to what we used to think about working online – that only computer savvy people or those who are very well verse about computers can actually work online – today, if you have a computer and an internet connection, you’re off to a good start.

The computer and the internet is only your tools to actually work ‘on line’ but the skills you have – writing, organizing, designing, marketing, etc –  is still what you basically offers.  For instance, you’re good at writing.  You can then look for people who needs help with writing articles or perhaps reviews and offer them your services.  There are lots of freelancing sites where you can create your account and look for every job imaginable.

You can also keep in touch with your passion, say baking or crafts, and then market it online.  Social media, Facebook, Tweeter, Tumblr, etc. is one of the most effective ways to get your stuff out there.  You can start website or blogs and really develop an online presence for your chosen passion.

Now, you may say you’re not into that kind of stuff – you don’t bake, you’re not exactly crafty and you’re not good at writing.  No worries, because you can always try affiliate marketing.  With affiliate marketing, you are basically the bridge between the costumers and the product and or services.  You provide the link to people where they can get what they’re looking for and you then get paid for affecting such a sale.  Internet marketing may sound very complicated at first, but trust me, it’s something that you can really learn even by yourself (well, of course with the help of web research).

How much money are we talking about?

Well, it depends really on how much time are you willing to invest and which online business are you going for.  Just like any businesses, success varies.  If you really put your mind into it, work hard, invest time and even money, working online can be a good source of income.

Working online is quite perfect for stay at home moms because quite frankly, they don’t have to literally leave the house.  So, it’s a perfect way to still be the stay at home mom – always there for the kids – and earn extra money for the family as well.

Can You Really Make Money By Working At Home?

There is no doubt that the idea of working at home or working from homeis now becoming an option to a lot of people.  While there are those who are very open to the idea and are very optimistic about the thought of living a more meaningful life, there are also those who are a bit condescending and doubt if you can really make money from working at home.

So, can you really make money from home?

Of course, it’s very possible!  In fact home businesses are becoming pretty popular now a day’s considering the state of our economy and the pretty much non-existent job security.

With enough drive and patience we can really make a living working from home.  A lot of people are not exactly happy with their jobs or may be couldn’t hardly keep one, so it’s not surprising that many are quite ready to jump (or considering) the idea of a home business.

While it’s true that we all have to make a living, sadly, we oftentimes forget to live.  We tend to get sucked into the vortex of eating-sleeping-working-then-repeat-routine.  This makes the very idea of working from home a very sensible option to break free from a somewhat monotonous existence.

Making money from home.

There are a lot of online business ideas that you can start on your own (sometimes from little to no start-up costs at all).  Having said that, don’t be too quick to grab the first one you see online.

Choices vary from internet marketingadvertising and or freelancing.  It would depend on your preferences – where you think you’re strongest at or which ones you’re most interested in.  It’s not entirely required that you’re already knowledgeable about the concept because you can pretty much learn all about it through online. (You just have to be patient of course.)

Remember to be cautious in choosing which home business idea you’d like to delve into.  Of course you can always try new and other things, maybe even at the same time, but it will considerably boost your confidence and fire your desire to do even more, the sooner you see positive results from working at home.

I will discuss more about these business ideas on my future posts;)

A few pointers before taking the leap.

The ‘world wide web’ is undeniably rich in information and helpful knowledge, but don’t forget that it’s also full of cr*p and opportunist as well.  So, here are my friendly words of advice before you finally decide to work from home and start your very own home business.

Weigh your options first. There are tons of it so don’t get too quick about clicking buttons after buttons.

Make up your mind if it’s really your ‘thing’ – if it is, study it more; if it isn’t, move on.

Research and research some more.  Bumps along the way (just like any businesses) are expected, it doesn’t mean though that it has to be rough, be well prepared.

If you hit a road block, stop, don’t panic but instead relax.  You may be just missing a ‘secret’ passage…or maybe you simply took the wrong turn altogether.

Be brave, be strong and believe.  Really, you can’t expect to go too far if you’re full of doubts to begin your journey with.

Be open.  Open-mindedness will take you a long way.  To learn you must first be willing to be thought.

And lastly – enjoy!

Business Ideas that Works

make money working online

We have already established that you can really make money by working from home.  Earnings may vary depending on which business ideas you decided to delve into and how much time and effort are you really willing to make – in other words, it’ll depend on how passionate are you with this new business venture.

There are apparent advantages of working from home, not to mention that there’s also a big possibility that you’ll be earning more than you would working on an 8 to 5-hour job.  Deciding to work at home – whether you’re a stay at home mom, just got laid out, or just quit from the workforce – may be the best decision you’re going to make in your life.

And although, you may earn yourself a couple of unsolicited advice from concerned individuals or doubtful look from families or friends as to why you don’t have a ‘real’ job – rest assured that you pretty much get the last laugh on this one.   ‘Cuz really, you can make a living by working from home!

Freelancing

Working as a freelancer online can be a good start.  You basically have a zero start up cost; you simply join a freelancing site and start applying for job based on your set of skills.

The good thing about freelancing is that you get to choose which job are you most interested in, you don’t get to experience that feeling of getting ‘stuck’ at something that drains you because most contracts are short term.

You are basically free to choose which job or people are you willing and most comfortable to work with.  You also get to decide how many hours are you willing to work in a day or in a week – which is perfect for stay at home moms or dads with kids (I know kids are a handful sometimes!)

And although the money you will be earning will depend on the hours you are working or job contracts landed, it’s not bad considering you practically didn’t shell out any dollars to start with.  This can be a good idea for stay at home moms or stay at home dads – because time can be really flexible.

You can actually save up from your earnings working as a freelancer and then later invest in other home business ideas.  And besides, who knows, freelancing online could be the perfect business idea for your given circumstances.

Affiliate Marketing

You have probably heard of this a million times before – affiliate marketing – you make money online by promoting one business’ products or services.  Generally the publisher (you) earns a commission whenever someone follows a link on your blog or website to another site and then sign up or bought products or services.

This business idea requires that you maintain a blog or website where, for instance, you can talk about gardening or baking and then suggest and or promote related affiliate products that you are connected with.  You can target specific niche depending on your blog or website’s theme.

It may take time before you can get your website going and needs work to get more traffic and ideally Google page ranking, but once you get the hang of it affiliate marketing can really bring you serious money.

Web Advertising

This works wonderfully for those who already own a blog or a website (of course you can always start one for this purpose).  Advertisers either pays for the ad space or the number of clicks or conversion their ads received through your site.

There is a considerable traffic generated by those who regularly blogs or update their website – high traffic as well as other considerations such as page rank, page authority and others are being considered by the advertisers.

Unlike in affiliate marketing, there is no need to promote the product and or services.  Ads can simply stay on your blog or website visually (generally on the header or sidebar) and you just go about your thing as usual engaging with your readers and ideally increasing your traffic.

How to Succeed with Your Home-Based Business

successful home-based businessImage courtesy of kibsri / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

You have heard of success stories about people and their home-based business, probably for a hundredth time (if not a thousand times already).  And it’s quite understandable if you’re a little cynical about it.  I would be, too, especially when these people tends to oversell the whole home-based business thing – as if everyone can do it, as if it’s that easy.

The fact of the matter is that: everyone may try it but not everyone will succeed; it can be easy but it’s not always easy.

Home-based business may not be for everyone

The idea of working at home, being your own boss and of course having your own business and or company, is a big draw to a lot of people – both working and those who are  unemployed.

It’s not even surprising that there are those who are quick to jump on the idea of putting up their own home-based business without giving it a second thought.  And although it’s true that sometimes you just have to muster the courage to just do it, it will help tremendously if you’ll do your own research and studying first.

This is basically one of the most common reasons why a lot of people are not succeeding with their home-based business. With so many opportunity available on the internet, they tend to grab one (in some cases too many) too soon.

Bear in mind that you have to know what you’re getting yourself into (especially those who are planning to do this full time); time and money are at stake.  And although there are home-based businesses that will require almost zero start-up costs, still you invest your time and theoretically you’re losing profits you should have been earning had you go for the ‘right’ one.

So how would you know which is the one for you?

You’ll have to know what you’re true skills are, what are you good at?  Know the things that interest you the most, what are you most passionate about?

The answer to these questions will help in steering you into the right direction.  For instance, you’re going to start a website that sells automobile parts and accessories – it may not be the best idea to start with when you’re not really into cars or know too little about cars.  But of course once you learn the whole internet marketing thing – you can basically sell whatever you wanted to by simply choosing affiliates that will help you exactly do that.

Or say for example, you wanted to start your own arts and crafts business where you can create and sell your stuff online – this will work best if you’re really into artsy stuff, more so if you’re an artist yourself.  If that’s the case, it will benefit you creative wise and business wise since you can do your own creation and you don’t have to get the products to sell from other people and you also earn full profit as well.

The importance of knowing what you are most passionate about in determining what home-based business to invest into will also play a big factor on whether you will be successful.

Passion and success really goes hand in hand, I believe that when you’re passionate about something success is inevitable.

success and failureImage courtesy of nonicknamephoto / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Who says home-based business is easy?

Any home-based business just like any other business involves work – and whether that ‘work’ will be easy or not depends on how dedicated you are.  Remember that it can be easy, but it’s not always easy.

Another reason why not everybody succeed in home-based business is that they expected it to be easy and they’re quick to give up once they realized that it involves ‘work’ too.  You have to keep in mind that you don’t know ‘everything’ and nobody expects you to.  But it also means that you will then have to ‘learn’ things in order to know them.

And besides, oftentimes, things seem hard at first but once you get your groove on it, then the easy part happens.  Just like what they say:  the first step is oftentimes the hardest.  If you give up so easily, how can you then enjoy the fruits of your labor?  Errr, that is, given you gave it some kind of ‘trying’ at some point of course.

So, how can you succeed with your home-based business?

Spend time to make your own research and study whatever home-based business you’re interested in.

Know your strengths, i.e. skills, interest, passions.

Set your limit; know how much time and money you are willing to invest.

Expect work.  Again, (for the nth time) it can be easy, but it’s not always easy.  To get to the easy part you’ll have to put work into it first.

To Work or Not To Work – Deciding to be a SAHM

to work or not to work 4

I have heard of stories about mom eventually deciding to be a SAHM (Stay at Home Mom) for practical reasons – like for instance, even if she is working, her salary may just be enough to pay the day care bills.  Point taken, but the thing is, would have she left the workforce by choice?

Then there are those who felt obliged to become a SAHM because they feel guilty that other people will be raising their kids.  But to be honest, of course, you’ll be raising your kids – you will need the help (either a nanny or day care centers or your mom or your in-laws) but you will be raising your own kids.

Although it’s very understandable for working moms to miss this point because they are so occupied with their career or exhausted from working that by the time their turn with the kids comes, all they wanted to do is glue them in front of the TV or put them to bed.  Hence, they feel like they couldn’t do both and opt to be a stay at home – even if they originally wanted to be the working girl.

A mother ‘stuck’ at home

The problem with the situations mentioned above is that, eventually the child or the kids are left with a mom that is depressed, frustrated and uninspired.  I guess the whole point of being with the kids –raising them yourself, nurturing them – has taken a different turn.

The child or children would likely develop emotional or psychological problems – feeling unworthy or undeserving or feel like they are a nuisance that is causing their mother’s heartbreak.  And no children should be made to feel that way.

A mother could easily feel stuck at home – taking care of the kids and managing the house.  Feeling small about the fact that she’s no longer the working woman she used to be and left with the ‘mundane’ task that she felt she’s over qualified to do.

Of course, there’s nothing mundane about being a SAHM.  It is also called work – a 24/7 work…without a salary – because it’s priceless!  So, being a stay at home mom is nothing short of being noble.

Again, it’s understandable why SAHMs are feeling the opposite.  The society has different notions about SAHMs in general.  And peers are not making it any easier.  Hence, more of the pressure is coming from outside factors.  It’s not even a question of whether you would like to raise your kids or not.  Of course you would like to do that, but, there’s always a ‘but’ somewhere there.

How blogging helps a SAHM

If one ultimately decides to be a stay at home mom it has to be because that is where her innermost dreams and hopes and passions lie.  Otherwise, she has to muster the strength to decide to continue working and leave the child to a day care, to a nanny or a sitter.

The reality though is that it’s NOT an easy decision to make.  It’s not exactly a ‘yes or no’ option.

The good thing is that technology has made it possible for SAHMs of today to have a platform where they can use not just for hobby or to release the tension and bottled-up emotions but also to revive their other passions in life.

Blogging provides a SAHM the platform where she can share her passions to other people – either if it’s about the career she used to have – teacher, nurse, realtor, and others, or it’s about that one thing that she has always dreamed about – being a green activist, improving cupcake recipes, creating awareness about organic food for example or humane treatment of animals, the list could go on and on.

Suffice to say that blogging is empowering SAHMs!

It’s been said time and again that journaling helps our personal development, and blogging can be your own take at journaling – and more!

In blogging, you can affect other people’s lives by serving as an inspiration or a motivation.  You can also turn blogging into a business to give you that extra income that you can contribute to your family’s finances or to start your own charity works.

The possibilities are endless, and the best part of it all is that through blogging you can survive being a stay at home mom – a SAHM that is fulfilled, dignified and happy.

To work or not to work

There is no definite answer to this; it will always come down to what you want.  Of course the children are the priority, but it’s the very reason why it has to come down to YOU, you have to know where your innermost dreams and hopes and passions lie.

The Challenges of Working At Home

In as much as I’m enjoying working at homehaving the freedom to manage my time anyway I want to – it is undeniably challenging as well.

Just like any work – be it a regular 8-5 job or managing a brick and mortar business – working at home also needs discipline and dedication as well.

Don’t be fooled with the idea that working at home means you can sleep all day or lull around in your PJs while you fatten up your bank account.  Seriously, let’s be real here.

work at homeImage courtesy of Ambro/FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Why Work at Home?

With the current state of our economy today plus the fact that job security is pretty much non-existent – having  something that you can either fall back into or provide you with supplemental income proved to be not so much of an option anymore.

Working at home is no longer viewed as risky as it used to be.  In fact, with the right tools, proper guidance and positive mindset you can actually ensure your family’s future by working from home.

The Perks of Working at Home

You basically manage your own timeYes, you can wake up late and work late at night or work early so you can free your evening.  You can go on Holiday vacation with family, you don’t have to miss your kids’ school activities, you get to choose your own ‘break time’ – you pretty much control your schedule.

You are your own boss.  Yes, you’ll be working with other people as well in the course of your home business or working from home, but you get a say on how to go about things.  You don’t have to blindly obey just because you’re told to.

In the same premise, you get all the credits.  You rightfully get the credits for working hard on something that you genuinely believe in.

The Challenges

Not everyone is a believer of this concept – working at home or working from home.  They still view it as good as being unemployed.

For me, these basically are the people who are too afraid to let go of what they have grown accustomed to.  They believe that a ‘real’ job is one where you clock in and clock out every day for 6 days, one where there is a boss, one where you have ‘office mates’ or ‘work mates’  and basically one where you need to go out of the house to ‘go’ to.

Hmmm, isn’t being tied to 9+ hour job per day proved to be stressful?  How about the ‘boss’ who constantly hover or expects too much? And the office politics, the bullying and all?  Don’t forget the time you have to spend traveling to work.

People think that when you’re working at home, you can be bothered anytime of the day since after all you’re just sitting at home, right? Well, not quite.

challenges of working from homeImage courtesy of Ambro/FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Working at home does mean you manage your own time, so the key is managing.  There is still some sort of order you have to deal with.  Yes, at times you can simply just go on a walk if you want to or decide to go AWOL to unwind.  But you get to decide when to do just that.

Say you’re writing an article, it’s not working, you can’t get a hold on a single thought…by all means take a leisurely walk instead, perhaps hang out with some friends for an hour or so. Or let’s say you feel all burnt out, you can then ultimately decide when is the right time to take a leave of absence and take a breather first.

So you see, there has to be some time management in place to make working at home work for you.

Working at home can be very challenging, just like any other ‘real’ job out there.  But I can honestly say that I’m leaving a fuller life – enjoying freedom, security of work and a much meaningful life.
